Obituary for Velma Elizabeth Yost

Dighton- Velma Elizabeth Yost, 91, died on Thursday, April 26, 2018 at Scott County Hospital in Scott City. She was born on August 17, 1926 in Scott County the daughter of Edgar Karl & Flora Elizabeth (Bockelman) Strickert. She married Keith Paul Yost on September 21, 1947 at Scott City. He died on July 29, 2003.

Velma’s father died when she was a young child and her mother remarried August Ehmke who Velma considered her father. She graduated from Dighton High School in 1944 and went to Bethany School of Nursing in Kansas City where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. After her husband’s discharge from the military they moved back to the family farm in Lane County. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton, Red Hatters & United Methodist Women. In her earlier years she was a 4-H Leader and a member of As You Like It club. Velma enjoyed playing in her bridge clubs and being a seamstress. She taught all of her children and grandchildren to sew. She traveled for over 20 years to winter to South Texas. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Step-Father, Husband 2 Sisters- Hilda Thomason & Margaret Stoppel & Brother- Albert Ehmke.

She is survived by 2 Daughters- Gayle & Bill Woodward of Huber Heights, Ohio & Marilyn Yost Wamalwa of Denver Colorado & Salituma Wamalwa of Kenya, 2 Sons- Roger & Terri Yost of Dighton & Arlen & Sharon Yost of Waterloo, Iowa, 11 Grandchildren & 18 Great-Grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday at United Methodist Church with Rev Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home.
