Obituary for Opal Nusser Sroufe

Opal Nusser Sroufe, 90, died Sunday, January 6, 2019 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born February 23, 1928 to Martin G. & Melusine (Trimpe) Nusser, Sr. on a farm near Copeland, Kansas in Haskell County.
Opal attended Prairie Lawn Grade School for 8 years. She then attended and graduated from Garden City High School in 1946. During high school, she was employed by F.W. Woolworths. After graduation, she was employed by C.R. Anthony. She later worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for Garden City Loan and Investments. On June 8, 1952, she married Phillip G. Sroufe in Garden City. A homemaker, Opal was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, the Get-Together-Girls, and was a volunteer at the Gift Nook at St. Catherine Hospital and Meals on Wheels. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, yard work, shopping, bird houses, chickens, and attended her grandchildren’s sporting events.
Survivors include 4 children Michael D. Sroufe of Windsor, Co., Betsy D. (Robert W.) Glunt of Ault, Co., Robert D. (Tammy) Sroufe of Spring, Tx., & Jeffrey D. Sroufe of Windsor, Co.; 6 sisters Rosetta Martin of Lubbock, Tx., Irene Gestenslager of Garden City, Ks., Lena Adams of Winfield, Ks., Joyce Williams of Lubbock, Tx., Joanna Boles of Andover, Ks., & Edith Jones of San Angelo, Tx.; a brother Martin Nusser, Jr. of Garden City, Ks.; 8 Grandchildren Andrea (Iain) King, Logan (Jennifer) Nagy, Landon (Vanesa) Nagy, Mandy (Matt) Benjamin, Tyler (Danie) Sroufe, Joshua (Rachel) Alex, Jonah Sroufe, & Elliana Sroufe; and 10 Great-Grandchildren Miller King, Marley King, Masen King, Aiden Nagy, Hudson Nagy, Liam Nagy, Emilia Nagy, Brooke Benjamin, Brenna Benjamin, & Wilder Alex. Opal is preceded in death by her husband Phillip G. Sroufe who died on September 24, 2004. She is also preceded in death by her parents; a son Jerry D. Sroufe; and a sister Melusine Algrim.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Garden City with Pastor Michael Hageman officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, and the family will be at Garnand Funeral Home from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday to visit with friends. The family suggests memorials given to the Bethesda Lutheran Communities or the Lutheran Hour both in care of the funeral home.
