Obituary for Del Ray Mounts

Del Ray Mounts, 79, died on Sunday July 28, 2019 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on March 17, 1940 at Beaver, Oklahoma the son of Samuel & Nellie (Albright) Mounts. He married Sharon R. Wilson and they enjoyed 61 years of marriage together.

Del Ray graduated from Perryton, Texas High School in 1958. He went to Texas Tech University on a baseball scholarship and walked on the basketball team. His Sophomore season he was rewarded a basketball scholarship and led the team in scoring the next three seasons. During his Tech career he averaged 17.7 points per game and scored 1,346 points in his three seasons. He scored in double figures in 38 straight games. He was a two-time all Southwest Conference first team and a 2 time “Small All-American” honoree. After graduating with his Business degree he moved to Bartlesville, Oklahoma and was a member of the renowned Phillips 66ers, and amateur powerhouse that won multiple AAU national championships. He is a member of the Texas Tech Hall Of Fame and the Southwest Conference Hall Of Fame. He once was asked about his basketball philosophy and said “I put up a lot of shots, now and then, one of them would go in. I kept shooting, shooting, shooting. My coach said keep shooting until it goes in. If it’s round and feels like leather, shoot it.”

After his playing career he moved to Garden City to work with Phillips 66 for 2 years and then moved to the corporate office in Denver. While in Denver he was instrumental in starting the Centaur Youth Organization which is a training program for youth in football and baseball and life. He returned to Garden City to become owner-operator of Mounts Oil Company which had 3 filling stations and a bulk fuel and oil division. In Garden City he coached many youth basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church, Past President of Southwind Country Club and Lions club. He was preceded in death by his Parents and Son- Marshall Dean Mounts.

He is survived by his Wife- Sharon Mounts, Son- Del Ray & Karla Mounts, Jr. of Wichita, Brother- Duane & Norma Mounts of Perryton, Texas, 4 Grandchildren and 4 Great-Grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Thursday at First Southern Baptist Church with Rev John Harms officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery in Garden City.
