Obituary for Roy Lester Mitchell
Roy Lester Mitchell, 76, died Saturday, August 10, 2019 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born February 23, 1943 in Welder, Texas the son of Joe Avan & Minniella (Ollison) Mitchell.
Roy lived in various places before moving to Garden City in the early 1980’s. He began working at IBP when it first opened. Roy later worked as a truck driver. He was a member and served as Deacon of the Riverside Church of God In Christ. Roy enjoyed raising farm animals, driving his truck, walking, and watching western movies.
On April 21, 1978, he married Kathy Herrera in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include six children Roy Lester Mitchell, Jr. of Waco, Tx., Andrew Lee (Cherie) Mitchell, Sr. of Alton, Ill., Darrin Dwayne Mitchell of Waco, Tx., Amanda Katheryn Mitchell of Garden City Ks., Anthony John Herrera of Garden City, Ks., & Michael Butler of Garden City, Ks.; three brothers Charles Mitchell of Garden City, Ks., Walter Mitchell of Dallas, Tx., & Van lee Mitchell of San Antonio, Tx.; a sister Brenda Mitchell of Wichita, Ks.; and several grandchildren.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents; two sisters Norma Louise Crosby and Shirley Mitchell; and five brothers Willie Frank Mitchell, Roy’s twin brother Sylvester Mitchell, Joe Mitchell, James Douglas Mitchell, & MacArthur Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Rev. Roger Bradshaw and Rev. Matthew Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Roy Mitchell Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home.
