Obituary for Phyllis Louise Van Meter

Phyllis Louise Bond was born August 22, 1930 in Taloga, Oklahoma to Orville S. & Leona M. (Todd) Bond. She passed from this life on Thursday, August 8, 2019 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas.

During her early years, Phyllis lived in Oklahoma before settling in Crowley, Colorado in 1942. She graduated from high school in 1948. In July 1948, she married Cecil “John” Van Meter in Raton, New Mexico. They became the proud parents of Johnny Lee, Debbra Raye, and Ricky Jay Van Meter. Later in life, Phyllis married Robert “Bob” Loper.

Phyllis was a member of Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City, a life member of ESA, the Crowley County Heritage Society, Finney County Senior Center, the Red Hat Society, VFW Auxiliary, & the American legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed her volunteer work, camping, family activities, her country, family, and the Lord.

Survivors include her three children Johnny Lee (Ruth) Van Meter of Kersey, Colorado, Debbra Raye Van Meter of Ft. Collins, Colorado, and Ricky Jay (Darlene) Van Meter of Garden City, Kansas; a sister Bobbie Chiles of Castle Rock, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren; thirty four great-grandchildren; and one great great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her husband John who died on December 20, 1992. She is also preceded in death by her parents; a sister JoAnn & husband Richard Reeder; a brother Larry & wife Ann Bond; a brother-in-law Norman Chiles; a grandson Jerimy Van Meter; a great-grandson Jaycab Van Meter; and a great great-granddaughter Amber Rose Bate.

A celebration of life service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at the Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in Garden City with Pastor Tim Fields officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to the Turning Point Church of the Nazarene in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
