Obituary for Eileen Cox

Eileen Cox, 92, died on Monday, August 26, 2019 at her home in Lakin. She was born on November 3, 1926 in Neosho County the daughter of Virgil Ellsworth & Ruth Ann (Tarwater) Herrin. She married Earl E. “Blackie” Cox on February 25, 1951 at Rogers, Arkansas. He died on April 14, 2017.

Eileen attended grade school in Erie and graduated from Savonburg High School in 1944. She attended Junior College in Chanute and Parsons and graduated from the Parsons Beauty Academy. She was a beautician in Parsons and taught school in Elsmore, Iola and St Paul. After she and her husband moved to Lakin she did ironing and was a dray women, driving a truck for Santa Fe Railroad delivering freight to local businesses from the train. She did two terms as a census taker 10 years apart for the federal government, drove a school bus, was a laundry aide at Kearny County Hospital and owned and operated Cox Fireworks for 40 years. She was a member and Past President of McAfee Stebbins VFW Auxiliary, Garden City Road Riders and Western Kansas Roadrunners Motorcycle Club. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Son- Kenneth Cox, 1 Brother, 1 Sister, Great-Grandson- James L. III and Granddaughter- Steph.

She is survived by 4 Children- Thomas Earl Cox (Michele) of Pueblo West, Colorado, Connie Jo Bryant of Lakin & Carthage, Missouri, Marjorie Lynn Hendershot of Lakin & Jack Richard Cox (Tina) of Peyton, Colorado, 12 Grandchildren, 34 Great-Grandchildren & 17 Great-Great-Grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be at 2:00 PM Thursday at United Methodist Church in Lakin with Rev. Ivan Milosi officiating. Burial will be in Lakin Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St Jude Children’s Hospital, Lakin Pride Committee or VFW (for flag purchases) in care of Garnand Funeral Home. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com
