Obituary

Helen Lucille Sparkman, age 90, daughter of the late Andrew and Ova Powell was born January 24, 1929, in Bucklin, Missouri, and was received into the arms of our Lord and Savior on September 17, 2019. Helen was a faithful member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School, was a member of Gloom Chasers Club, and worked several years for Bultman’s. Helens favorite pastimes included spending time with her family and friends, gardening, sewing, and baking her homemade specialties. Helen had been a resident of Cimarron County, Oklahoma, from 1949 until moving to Lubbock, Texas, in 2016 where she was then a 2 year resident of assisted living.

Helen is survived by her son, Dennis Sparkman and wife Darlene of Tuttle, Oklahoma; daughter-in-law, Beverly Sparkman of Keyes, Oklahoma; daughter, Marlene Ashley of Lubbock, Texas; and daughter, Starla Overstreet and husband Tim of Bedford, Virginia. Helen also is survived by 10 grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Steven Sparkman and wife Heather, Rachell Peitz and fiancé Jeff, Justin Sparkman, Skye Kreger and husband Aaron, Jarrod Ashley and wife Patty, Aaron Ashley, John Ashley and wife Sarah, Adam Sparkman and wife Kalli, Audra Boedeker and husband Matt, and Andrea Negron and husband Josue. Blessings abound with Helen having 37 great-grandchildren and counting. Helen’s surviving siblings are brother, Ed Powell of Marceline, Missouri; sister, Wanda Stark of Brighten, Colorado.

In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Gair Sparkman; son, Gary Sparkman; brother, Jim Powell; sister, Lavelle Penick; and brother, Earl Powell.

Funeral service will be 2:00 PM Monday, September 23, 2019, at the First Baptist Church in Elkhart, with grandson, John Ashley officiating. Interment will follow at Elkhart Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday, September 22, 2019, at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart; and Monday, September 23, 2019, from 10:00 AM until service time at the First Baptist Church. So sorry to hear of Helen’s death. May God give peace and comfort in the days ahead. I remember on several occasions being at the house when it was chicken ‘dressing’ day. The whole process intrigued me and she was so kind to let me do parts of it. I learned a whole new meaning to the phrase “running around like a chicken with its head cut off”! She was a gentle, kind, sweet lady and was a blessing to all who knew her.
