Susan M. Ortega, 63, died Monday, September 30, 2019 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born July 2, 1956 in LaJunta, Colorado the daughter of Nick & Mary Enis (Villarreal) Hernandez.

Susan grew up in Ulysses, Kansas where she attended school and graduated from high school. She then attended Garden City Community College. Susan lived in Garden City, moving to Cimarron, Kansas in 1997. She later moved back to Garden City in 2004 where she has lived since. Susan worked for many years as a paraprofessional for the Cimarron and Garden City school districts. Susan enjoyed helping at the Garden City Family YMCA Daycare, translating, teaching English, and helping people to become US citizens, crocheting, puzzles, church activities, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She was first married to Rafael Cruz. Susan later married Leonardo Ortega in 1996 in Cimarron, Kansas. He died in 2004. Susan is also preceded in death by her parents and a son Nick Davila.
Survivors include five children Cory Davila of Salina, Kansas, John Davila of San Marcos, Texas, Mario Davila of Salina, Kansas, Stephanie Cruz of Dodge City, Kansas, & Brandi Ortega of Garden City, Kansas; two brothers Frank Hernandez and Michael Hernandez both of Ulysses, Kansas; twenty two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A Rosary will be held at 10:00 a.m. with a Funeral Mass following at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2019 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Jacob Schneider as Celebrant. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019 at the Cimarron Cemetery in Cimarron, Kansas. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City.
