Obituary for Tony Messenger

Tony Messenger, 58, died Saturday, October 26, 2019 at Ascension via Christi, St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. He was born January 22, 1961 in Dumas, Texas the son of Neil D. & Lanelle D. (Creach) Messenger.

Tony grew up as a young child in Middlewell, Texas. He moved with his family to Garden City in 1972 where he attended schools and graduated from Garden City High School. On November 17, 1979, he married Jacqueline "Jackie" Dreiling in Garden City. They lived in Garden City until 2018 when they moved to Bel Aire, Kansas. Tony worked most of his life in the beef packing industry where he worked for IBP and later for Cargill. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Garden City. Tony enjoyed dirt track racing, playing cards especially poker, going to the casinos, the Dallas Cowboys, and loved to spend time with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Jacqueline “Jackie” Messenger of the home; two children Jeremy Messenger and Jessica (Michael) Bakken both of Wichita, Kansas; a brother Daniel Neil (Chris) Messenger of Garden City, Kansas; sisters Rickilene (Joe) Emery of Bel Aire, Kansas, Deborah (Patrick) Mossman of Kerrville, Texas, & Marty (Daryl) Dinkel of Garden City; and two grandchildren Brady Bakken and Madelyn Bakken. Tony is preceded in death by his parents; a son Thomas Edward Messenger; a brother Gary Edward Messenger; and a nephew Devin Scott Emery.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 1, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 9:00 a.m.t o 11:00 a.m. on Friday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the First United Methodist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
