With the exception of Army service in Korea, Earl lived all of his nearly 89 years on the farm north of Lakin where he was born. He had a deep love of farming the land and watching crops grow. He was on the combine every day of this year’s wheat, corn and milo harvest, one of his most bountiful ever.
Earl served many years on the Kearny County Extension Council board and the Lakin Co-op board. At the 1975 Kansas State Fair, Earl received a gold watch for first place in the mill-bake show. He was awarded the 1989 State of Kansas soil moisture manager award for his conservation efforts.
Earl married Judy Brown on August 23, 1964 in Wilson. Earl’s favorite leisure activities were bowling and visiting Las Vegas. Earl and Judy enjoyed Sunday night mixed league bowling for 55 years. He delighted in driving Nascar racecars around the Las Vegas track at top speeds of 152 mph. The Kleemans enjoyed farm tours to Europe, Mexico and Australia. Recent years found them favoring slower paced cruises.
