Obituary for Katherine Miner Hart
Katherine Miner Hart, Age 95 passed way on Feb. 2, 2020 at her home in Garden City. Katherine was born in Seattle, Washington on July 8, 1924 to Dr. O.W. Miner and Ruth Swift Miner. She attended Garden City Schools, graduating in 1942. She then attended Garden City Community College and the University of Colorado, graduating Cum Laude in 1946 with a degree in business administration.
She married Dean Hart, a pilot recently returned from the war, on Oct. 26, 1946 in Garden City. They were married for nearly forty eight years. Katherine and Dean had four daughters. Caverly Hart, Garden City, Julia Petersen (James) Wichita, Ruth Spiker (Terryl), Syracuse and Mary Karlin (Steve) Garden City.
Katherine worked for Henkle Drilling Company from 1967-1978. Starting in 1978 she became the Administrative Trustee and Secretary for the Finnup Foundation Trust. Under Katherine’s guidance the Finnup Foundation made many lasting contributions to Garden City. She worked actively until the age of 87 when she retired and was appointed Trustee Emeritus.
Katherine was inducted into the Garden City High School Hall of Fame in 2004. In 2018 she received the William Booth award from the Salvation Army. This is their highest award that may be conferred upon an individual for outstanding service and dedication to the community.
Katherine served on the board of many civic organizations and committees through the years, including The Salvation Army, The Finney County Historical Society and the St Catherine’s Hospital Foundation Board. Katherine was a lifetime member of the Community Congregational Church. Other memberships included Monday Club, Rotary Club, and PEO Chapter X. Katherine enjoyed golfing, gardening, playing bridge and reading. In later years she enjoyed watching her favorite show, Jeopardy.
During their marriage, Katherine and Dean pursued their interest in horses and horse racing. Katherine continued racing horses after Dean’s death in 1994 and was able to see them receive several awards for their success.
In addition to her daughters, Katherine is survived by 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren who loved her greatly.
She was preceded in death by two beloved sisters, Hilda Flynn and Mary Kaufman.
Katherine leaves an outstanding legacy in charitable work and a family she raised with love and understanding.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at the Community Congregational Church in Garden City with Pastor Jeff Starkey and Robert DeLeon officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Community Congregational Church or to the Salvation Army, both in care of the funeral home.
