Obituary for Bryce Baker

Garden City- Bryce Baker, 80, died on Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Hays Medical Center in Hays. He was born on June 25, 1939 in Emporia while his father was in summer school. He was the son of Cecil and Mamie (Miller) Baker. He married Diane Piland on December 16, 1962 and together they raised two daughters, Alaine and Janelle, and one son, Landon.

Bryce grew up in Sublette and when he was 10 the family moved to Garden City where he graduated from Garden City High School and Garden City Community College. He was passionate about his career in television advertising and managing the ABC affiliate television station, KUPK. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and had a desire to see the church thrive. He helped organize the Methodist Men’s Groundhog Supper for 40 years and led at trip to the Holy Land.

He was active in school theater, de Molay, Rotary, and was a past president of the Finney County Historical Society. He built the first miniature golf course in Garden City and organized the Cecil Baker Memorial Horseshoe Tournament for nearly 40 years. He loved sports and traveling, and was never at a loss for a captivating story.

He is survive d by his Wife- Diane Baker of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 3 Children- Alaine Thigpen and Husband Charles of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Janelle Gregory and Husband Brandon of Olathe and Landon Baker of Olathe, 2 Grandsons- Isaac Gregory and Brian Thigpen, 2 Brothers- Charles Baker and Wife Sue of Washington State and Bob Baker of Kansas City, Kansas, Sister- Barbara Burnside of Kathy, Texas and dear friends Eric and Heather Cenatiempo of Garden City. He was preceded in death by his Parents and Sister- Marjorie Barton.

There will be a Memorial Service at a later date after burial at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church or Finney County Historical Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com
