Obituary for Bernard Michael "Bernie" Adam
Bernard Michael (Bernie) Adam, 67, of Garden City, passed from this life on May 6, 2020, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
Bernie was born on January 11, 1953, to Ben and Bertha (Reinert) Adam in Plainville, KS. The family moved to Esbon in 1956 where he went to school and worked on the family farm until they moved to Tipton in 1969. He completed his education at Tipton High School in 1971.
After high school he started his lifelong work in construction and carpentry, eventually starting Bernard Adam Construction in Garden City. He found a true passion in helping people when he became the Housing Program Coordinator at the Center for Independent Living in Garden City for three years. He built and remodeled many homes and businesses in Garden City and the surrounding area throughout the years and did beautiful work.
He married the love of his life, Mary Bergmann, in 1978 and moved to Garden City where they built a beautiful home and had three wonderful children, Katie, Kelsie, and Joseph.
He is survived by his wife, Mary and children Katie Bird and husband Jeff of Rose Hill, KS, Kelsie McMillan and husband Brandon of Hays, KS, and Joseph of Kansas City, MO, his brother John Adam and wife Albertha of Salina, sister Kathryn Burghart and husband Bernie of Salina, sister Tilly Kirchner of Charlotte, NC, brother Ed Adam and wife Judy of Tipton, brother Jack Adam of Des Moines, IA, sister Suzie Talbert of Pasadena, CA, sister Barb Reinert and husband Alan of Wichita, along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. He is also survived by four grandchildren that he loved dearly: Aiden, Sophia, Hailey, and Addyson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Ben and Bertha Adam, sister Lenora Mick, sister Margaret Henry, brother Charles Adam, sister Loretta Murray, sister Mary Sharrow, and sister Caroline Whittecar.
Memberships include St. Dominic Catholic Church, St. Dominic Property Commission, and Knights of Columbus- 3rd Degree.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, vintage automobiles, and collecting coins. His favorite way to spend a weekend would be attending an auction followed by an Old Western marathon, with Church and NASCAR on Sunday. Bernie will be remembered for his strong faith in God, his courage, his amazing ability to fix anything, and his sense of humor that came out at the most unexpected moments. He will be missed and remembered by everyone who knew him.
Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 17, 2021 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. The funeral Mass may also be viewed via Facebook on the Garnand Funeral Home Facebook page after the Memorial Mass is complete.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorials be sent to St. Dominic Catholic Church, Hospice of St. Catherine Hospital, or the Heartland Cancer Center, all in Garden City and all in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
