Obituary for Russell J. "Jim" Maxfield Jr.
Known as Jim, Russell J. Maxfield, Jr. lived from 1949 to 2020. A lifelong Garden City, KS resident, Jim passed away near the ocean in Rockledge, Florida. An avid fisherman, Jim went to Florida to visit his son Adam in January and he enjoyed it so much he decided to rent a place and stay awhile.
He was born on April 11, 1949 in Garden City at St. Catherine Hospital to Dr. Russell and Leona Maxfield. He graduated from Garden City High School, Garden City Junior College and Kansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was part of the Garden City High School wrestling and golf teams and lettered in both sports. Professionally, he was a successful real estate broker and real estate investor.
Jim was married to Debra Selichnow from 1977 to 2016, and they raised two boys, Ashton and Adam. As a loving father, Jim was present and very active in his boys’ lives. He (and Debra) took the boys to church, introduced them to Jesus and supported them. He often told people how proud he was of his sons.
He didn’t wait for retirement to enjoy life. As a real estate investor, he set his business up to work for him while he was spending time with his family or pursuing his outdoor passions of fishing and hunting. He took pride in teaching his sons to hunt and fish. Both of his sons followed in his footsteps in the pursuit of fishing and real estate investments.
For many years he was active in the HI-PLAINS BASSMASTERS fishing club. He was a competitive fisherman that enjoyed winning many Bass tournaments.
For most of his adult life he was an active member of Bible Christian Church. He raised his children in the church and continued to attend regularly into 2020.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Leona Maxfield, and two brothers William (Billy) and Larry Maxfield.
He is survived by his sons Ashton (and his wife Tammy), Adam (and his wife Catherine), three grandchildren Owen, Wyatt and Whitney, as well as one sister Barbara Schaak. A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. on July 18, 2020 at Bible Christian Church in Garden City.
