Obituary for Paula J. Prokop
Paula J. Prokop, 74, died Thursday, July 2, 2020 at St. Catherine hospital in Garden City, Kansas after a long battle with MS. She was born May 23, 1946 in Ashland, Kansas the daughter of John & Marcella (Dome) Degnan.
Paula moved with her family to Garden City when she was a child. She attended Garden City schools and graduated from Garden City High School in 1964. She then attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. She earned a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Kansas State University. Paula began teaching in Utah, Colorado, and then in the Kansas City, Missouri area. She then moved back to Garden City where she taught elementary education for USD #457 from 1979 to 2006 when she retired. Paula was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. She enjoyed reading, gardening, plants, golfing, sweets, and as an avid Kansas State University fan she loved KSU football. Paula also loved and cherished her dogs Audrey and Huggin.
On August 5, 1983, she married Larry Prokop in Garden City, Kansas. He survives. Other survivors include a daughter Courtney Duffield of Garden City; and two sisters Deanna & husband Michael Ewers of Dayton, Ohio and Micki Kleymann of Tribune, Kansas. Paula is preceded in death by her parents; two infant brothers; and a brother-in-law Jon Kleymann.
A Rosary will be held at 6:30 p.m. with Funeral Mass beginning at 7:00 p.m. both on Monday, July 6, 2020 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at the Highland St. Joseph Cemetery in Ashland, Kansas. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday and from 9:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m. on Monday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. In lieu of flowers the family request memorials given to St. Dominic Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
