Obituary for Bettie Lee Murphy (Hemel)

Dighton- Bettie Lee (Hemel) Murphy, 87, died Thursday July 2, 2020 in Dighton, Kansas. She was born August 16, 1932 in Alamota, Kansas the daughter of Jacob and Charolette (Voos) Hemel.

Bettie grew up in the Lane County area attending the local schools and graduating from Dighton High. It was there that she met her husband Robert. The two were wed December 22, 1949 in Dighton. Bettie came from a large family and so naturally she and Robert had one of their own with 10 children. The family lived in California, Dighton, Hill City, and Scott City over the years until Robert’s retirement in 1994, which led them to Harper, Kansas.

Bettie was a strong woman and known to be outspoken. She spent her years raising children and tending to the duties of the household. Her children fondly remember her apple pies and fresh loaves of bread. Bettie enjoyed playing bingo, gambling, and card games. Although she was firm, family was important to her and weekend gatherings were frequent.

Bettie is survived by her children- Dennis of Scott City, Larry (Marlene) of Scott City, Kathy (Curtis) Lewis of Des Moines, Iowa, Bob (Pam) of Scott City, Charlie (Gail) of Scott City, Susan of Dighton, Sandra (Dane) Pendleton of Albia, Iowa, Melvin (Denise) of Scott City, and Ron of Scott City. Five sisters- Melva (Freeman) Knight of Scott City, Ila (Gene) Boone of Dighton, Alice Rennison of Scott City, Shirley Ummel of Harper, and Linda (Greg) Barlow of Anthony. 20 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 3 great great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband- Robert, Sr., brothers- Ed, Reub, Cliff, Don, Delmar, and Jake, Jr., one sister- Nedra Sue, one son- Roger, three grandsons- Deacon, Tyler, and Jarrett, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Service will be held Tuesday July 7, 2020 at 10:30 am at Dighton United Methodist Church with Rev. Berniece Ludlum officiating. Friends may call from noon to 8 Monday July 6, 2020 at Boomhower Funeral Home.
