Obituary for Mary Lou Pickler

Mary Lou Pickler, age 92, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Thursday, July 30, 2020, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born December 18, 1927, in Ottawa, Kansas the daughter of Roscoe and Louise (Esterly) Redmond.

Mary Lou grew up in Ottawa where she graduated from Ottawa High School in 1945. After graduating high school, Mary Lou continued her education at The University of Kansas where she obtained her Bachelors of Psychology in 1951. Shortly after, she was employed by Stafford’s where she worked as a clerk.

Mary Lou married Richard M. Pickler on May 10, 1952 and they enjoyed 68 wonderful years together. In 1960 they relocated to Ulysses, Kansas where they would settle and raise a family. During her time in Ulysses, Mary Lou was a very active community member, volunteering at the Hospital Auxiliary and involving herself in the American Legion Auxiliary, DAR, PEO, Bridge Club, and 4-H. Mary Lou was also very involved with her kid’s education and the many activities they were participating in. Some of Mary Lou’s favorite things to do include listening to the Kansas City Royals Baseball team on the radio while she played solitaire and she could always be found cheering on the KU Basketball team. Mary Lou will be remembered by the many cards she sent out for birthdays, anniversaries, and celebrations of many.

Mary Lou is survived by her husband, Richard Pickler, of their home; daughters, Susan Alexander of Ulysses, Kansas, and Nancy Jones and husband Steve of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; son, Mike Pickler and wife Leslie of Manhattan, Kansas; 7 grandchildren, Jeremy Alexander and wife Theresa, Brian Alexander, Jan Lee and husband Brandon, Kim Arnes and husband Jason, Brad Jones and wife Shawnda, Cole Rightmeier and girlfriend Whitney, Grace Loveday and husband Chris, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mary Lou is preceded in death by her parents; infant son; and grandson, Brian Alexander.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses, Kansas, with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating. Services may also be viewed on Garnand Funeral Home Facebook Live. Interment will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, Kansas. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 4, 2020, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to Ulysses First United Methodist Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave., Ulysses, Kansas 67880.
