Obituary for Edith Knoll

H. Edith Knoll passed away at Garden Valley Retirement Village on August 6, 2020 in Garden City, Kansas. She was born on October 16, 1932 in Plains, Kansas to William Oscar and Hazel (Hull) Bond. She married Timothy Knoll on July 15, 1950 at Buffalo, Oklahoma. He preceded her in death on May 2, 2000. They had seven children, she is survived by sons, Gary (Sheila) Knoll Topeka, Ks, Ken (Susan) Knoll Burnsville, MN, daughters, Dora (David) Grilliot, Syracuse, Ks, Mona (Rick) Andersen Topeka, Ks, Joyce Barnes Garden City, Ks, Pam (Craig) Brungardt Garden City, Ks, Judy (Ken) Claar Franktown, Co, 17 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Ernest and Albert Bond, a sister Ruth Bond and granddaughter Melissa Strendin-Swenson.

Edith was born on a farm in Plains, Kansas and moved to Gate, Oklahoma when she was three years old. She attended school in Gate and graduated from Gate High School. She played women’s basketball in her high school years where at that time they only played half court. After marriage her and Timothy soon moved to the family farm in St. Peter, Kansas during that time Tim was serving in the Korean War. After completion of service they moved from the farm to Garden City, Kansas where they raised their family of seven children.

Edith was employed for several years in the retail industry at Surplus Outlet and Coast to Coast. She also worked at the Finney County Treasurers office until her retirement. When Wal-Mart opened in Garden City, she again sought part-time employment and stayed at Wal-Mart for over 10 years working in various departments.

Edith kept busy volunteering at various organizations including the following: The Garden City Senior Center, St. Catherine Hospital, Red Cross, Finney County Tourism Bureau and St. Catherine Benincasa of Siena. She was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church, The Daughters of Isabella, St. Dominic Altar Society, RSVP Volunteer Program and The Healing Love Prayer Group and her most enjoyed passion The Humdinger Band. In 2008 she was awarded the Volunteer of the Year at St. Catherine Hospital. Edith enjoyed reading, crocheting, line dancing at the Senior Center, traveling, spending time with her grandchildren and her light shined when the great grandchildren came to visit.

A Vigil service will be held Monday, August 10th at 7:00pm and Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, August 11 at 10:30 am at St Dominic Catholic Church. Burial at Valley View Cemetery following Mass. Social distancing and masks will be required. Visitation will be held from 9:00am to 5:00pm Monday August 10th at Garnand Funeral Home.
