Obituary for Suellen Mary Bergkamp

Suellen Mary Bergkamp, 68, died June 10, 2022 at Kearny County Hospital in Lakin, Kansas. She was born July 29, 1953 in Kansas City, Missouri. The daughter of Charles J. and Mary Margaret (Wheeler) Schrufer.

Suellen graduated from Madonna High School in Wichita, Kansas. She then went on to obtain her Associates Degree through Wichita State University. In 1976 she married her loving, caring husband, Alvin Bergkamp. The two of them spent 46 years together. The last 43 years have been in Lakin, where they have raised their daughters and now get to enjoy their grandchildren.

Suellen was a member of the St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Altar Society. She enjoyed working as a CNA/CMA at High Plains Retirement Village for 14 years then went on to become the Activities Director at HPRV. Suellen had several patients who were extremely fond of her and were very thankful for her graciousness and loving care. In 2005 Alvin and Suellen purchased the local liquor store. Suellen spent the remainder of her life managing the store, Santa Fe Trail Liquor. Suellen had many wonderful customers/employees she enjoyed visiting with and will miss her dearly.

Since her passing her family has received many comments about how much they loved Suellen and how beautiful and kind-hearted she was as a friend. Suellen loved helping others anyway she could, going above and beyond what many others might even think about. Suellen was a devout, faithful Catholic. Her wit and sense of humor always made her fun to be around. Suellen’s nieces and nephews always talk about the quilts she made for all of their weddings and firstborns. She was a fan of country music and much to everyone’s surprise enjoyed hip-hop/R&B music. She loved spoiling her children and grandchildren.
