I am deeply saddened to learn of Betty’s passing. In 1982, she was the assistant librarian at Elizabeth High School when I was an inexperienced first-year teacher. She was welcoming and kind to me, and I frequently spent my lunch time with her in the library. I considered her a mentor. She was remarkably patient with the students, especially those that required a little more attention. I recall one day when a student vented, and called Betty, “Grandma”, not in a respectful way. Betty just smiled and told him, “ Yes, I am a Grandma”. Then she removed a stack of grandchildren photos from her purse, and sat next to the ornery student to show him pictures, and tell about each of her grandchildren. She was a sweet, caring woman, and I have thought about her often over the decades.
