Obituary for Vergil E. Johnson

Vergil E. Johnson, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Thursday, August 24, 2017, at his home in rural Grant County. He was born January 17, 1935, in Grant County, Kansas, the son of Elmer and Helen (Jones) Johnson.

Vergil was a lifetime resident of Grant County. He married Marilyn Jueschke on September 5, 1954, in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. Vergil worked for Mesa Petroleum for 20 years. He was a partner in JD Trenching, and then began farming in the early 1970’s.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn of the home; son, David Johnson and wife Chris of Ulysses; daughters, Cindy Borthwick and husband Jerry of Ulysses, Melinda Malone-Goetz and husband Bruce of Bayfield, Colorado, and Barbara Sullins and husband Alan of Ulysses; brothers, Carl Johnson and wife Deanna, and Steve Johnson and wife Marlene all of Ulysses; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Vergil is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Robert Johnson and Don Johnson; and sister, Marjorie Von Bank.

Vigil service will be held Sunday, August 27, 2017, at 7:00 PM and funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 28, 2017, at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ulysses with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Interment will follow at the Golden Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, August 27, 2017, from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Grant County Community Foundation in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
